Once upon a time, a couple in love with dogs, Chris and Mariesa Hughes, decided to adopt all the elderly and rejected dogs from shelters to give them a second chance at life.
This decision not only touched the hearts of internet users but also transformed the lives of hundreds of needy dogs.
“I always wanted to rescue dogs since I was a child,”
said Mariesa, 40.
With an unwavering commitment to providing the best possible care for all animals, Chris and Mariesa dove headfirst into this noble challenge.
They not only rescued over 600 elderly and special needs dogs over time but also opened their doors and hearts to over a dozen canines in their own home.
“Throughout our time with him, we realized how expensive it was to care for an elderly and sick dog, so after he passed away, we decided to take on the work of finding homes for elderly dogs, paying for all veterinary care and building fantastic homes for dogs who needed all the love but had no extra money,”
said Mariesa.
To ensure that these lovely furballs enjoyed a comfortable and love-filled life, the couple carefully prepared their home.
Additionally, they founded the Mr. Mo Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding loving homes for dogs and covering all their medical expenses for the rest of their lives.
The story of this devoted couple did not start out of nowhere. Chris and Mariesa, both passionate about dogs since childhood, merged their families, which already included eight dogs.
But their love for animals knew no bounds, and they continued to welcome more dogs into their family.
The Mr. Mo Project was inspired by Chris’s dog, Moses, an old Pittie who unfortunately passed away after 22 months of love and care.
This event led the couple to realize how expensive and challenging it was to care for an elderly and sick dog.
In honor of Moses, they decided to dedicate themselves to finding loving homes for elderly dogs, ensuring that all their medical care was covered.
Despite having full-time jobs, Chris and Mariesa spare no effort in finding loving homes for dogs and covering their medical expenses. They welcome sick, injured, and rejected dogs due to medical expenses.
In their home, the dogs have all the comfort and care they need, including a spacious fenced garden, custom kennels, and even hydrotherapy and laser equipment for joint and wound treatment.
Caring for such a large family of dogs with special needs can be challenging, as Mariesa notes.
But for them, every moment of stress is outweighed by the love and gratitude of the dogs who now have a second chance at life.
While there are moments of sadness when they can’t save all the dogs they encounter, Chris and Mariesa remain steadfast in their mission.
For them, seeing the transformation and well-being of the rescued dogs makes all the effort and sacrifice worthwhile. It is a challenging job, but undoubtedly, it is the purpose of their lives.
And so, this extraordinary couple continues their journey, offering love, care, and a second chance for every dog that crosses their path.
