Prima was discovered in February 2023, in a small makeshift kennel, after being abandoned in the winter. She was severely malnourished, struggling to survive by eating anything she could find.
At the time of the rescue, Prima was on the brink of death, highlighting the urgency of immediate treatment for her recovery. Her condition was more severe than initially thought, making urgent treatment her only hope of survival.
Desperate Rescue
Jannel and Robby, two volunteers from Houston, Texas, found Prima while walking in a local park, where they used to feed abandoned animals.
She was lying in one of the shelters that Corridor Rescue had set up for stray animals during the winter.
As they approached, they realized that Prima did not look like a typical dog.
“This girl was so hungry that when she was abandoned, she would eat anything she could find and keep eating,” Corridor Rescue wrote in a Facebook post.
Her spine was visible, and her swollen belly was possibly the result of advanced heart disease. The volunteers offered her food and water, which she accepted hesitantly.
“I was shocked by what I saw when she came out. She looked like a skeleton, but with a very large belly. I immediately started making calls knowing she needed immediate rescue,” Janell wrote on Facebook.
Despite being scared and clearly afraid of humans, she seemed to know that her saviors would not harm her.
Surprising News
Finally at the vet, the little dog was diagnosed with serious problems that put her on the brink of death. There were parasites in her pulmonary artery.
The veterinarians already considered her in a terminal state. The focus shifted to offering her comfort in her final moments of life.
It was clear that Prima had faced years of suffering and neglect. Prima had suffered severe abuse, resulting in enormous trauma.
Despite her condition, the rescue team did not give up on Prima and cared for her intensely every day. Injections were administered, she was kept hydrated, and everything was done to give her at least a chance of survival.
Miraculously, Prima recovered, her abdominal swelling gradually reduced, and the parasites were successfully eliminated from her body.
“She refused to be defined by her past. This little fighter defied expectations and refused to accept the label of ‘terminal’,” the shelter highlighted in their Facebook post.
After intensive treatment, Prima was finally relocated to a shelter, where she could play with other dogs and wait for a family to adopt her.
Uma Nova Vida
Despite all the traumas of the past, Prima gradually overcame them and became a happy and affectionate dog.
According to her temporary caregivers, it became impossible to take a picture of her without it being blurry, as she moved from side to side, happy.
In no time, a loving family saw Prima and decided to adopt her.
Now, Prima lives a completely different life from the past, she is a happy animal in the arms of people who want her around.
