One afternoon, Lieschen O’Neill decided to visit the Lawrence Humane Society in Kansas.
She claimed it was just to take a look around, but as she later admitted, “no one goes to the Humane Society just to look.”
And that’s exactly what happened. Amongst many dogs, one in particular captured Lieschen’s heart.
This dog, who ended up being named Belle, was not your typical rescue dog.
She had something special about her, something that made her unique and unforgettable.
When Belle was about a year old and starting to reach adult size, her family noticed something different about her.
From an early age, Belle seemed a bit unusual, but as she grew older, this characteristic became even more prominent.
There was something intriguing about her eyes, something that made them look permanently surprised or shocked.
Intrigued by Belle’s peculiarity, her family took her to the vet.
After carefully examining her eyes and face, the vet explained that Belle likely got stuck in the birth canal during the birthing process, which caused a slightly different muscle development in her face.
This resulted in a slightly distinct appearance, with slightly bulging eyes.
However, Belle was perfectly healthy despite her unique appearance.
Her eyes would occasionally get dry, but with some prescribed eye drops for dogs, everything was fine.
But Belle was not just a dog with a peculiar appearance; she was much more than that.
From the moment Lieschen saw her at the shelter, Belle stood out.
She was a ball of energy, eager for attention and affection.
When Belle jumped into her lap and started licking her face, Lieschen immediately knew that Belle would be part of their family. It was as if Belle had chosen them.
“She just jumped into my lap, licked my face, and at that moment, we knew we were going home with Belle. It was a great day,”
Said Lieschen.
Since then, Belle has become an essential part of Lieschen and her family’s life.
She was an excellent companion, always ready to listen and offer comfort.
Despite her peculiarity, Belle was loved by all.
She had her quirks, like her love for slippers, but she was also a typical dog, enjoying treats, naps, and above all, the love of her family.
“She loves slippers, loves carrying them around. She might grab one or two slippers, sometimes even three slippers and see how many she can fit in her mouth and just carry them,” Lieschen said.
For Lieschen and her family, Belle was more than just a pet; she was a constant source of joy, love, and companionship.
They couldn’t imagine their lives without her, and Belle, with her unique and captivating ways, continued to charm everyone around her.
