In a tragic twist of fate, Stu the Saint Bernard’s story begins in circumstances that no living being deserves to face.
Abandoned in a box, left behind in an abandoned house, Stu was discovered in a deplorable state by the rescue team of Stray Rescue of St. Louis.
His frail body, severely emaciated and dehydrated, told the story of his lonely struggle for survival.
Weighing only 20 kilograms, an adult Saint Bernard like him should weigh much more, clearly indicating the months of neglect and deprivation he had endured.
Soaked in urine, his once majestic and lush fur was now dirty and matted, reflecting the abandonment and desolation he had faced.
The rescue not only represented a second chance for Stu, but also a ray of hope amidst the darkness of his ordeal.
A New Beginning
His first meal at the shelter, after who knows how long, was an emotional milestone.
Against all odds, Stu found the strength to get up and walk, a courageous gesture that inspired those around him.
The journey to recovery, however, was just beginning.
“When he arrived, we washed him, raised his body temperature, gave him fluids, and gave him a small meal. His body craved calories and nutrients. That first night was scary – we didn’t know if he would survive.”
Wrote Stray Rescue of St. Louis in their post.
Day after day, Stu showed signs of improvement, his resilient spirit rising despite the challenges he faced.
His kindness and sweetness won the hearts of staff and volunteers, as well as the support and love of thousands of people around the world.
Thanks to the mobilization of these efforts, a loving and welcoming family was quickly found for Stu. Overflowing with gratitude and relief, he could leave behind the cold corridors of the shelter and settle into a home where he would finally find peace and comfort.
The Road to Recovery
Since then, every day has been a journey of healing and discovery for Stu. Gaining 10 kilograms in such a short time is a testament to the care and love dedicated to him in his new home.
“This sweet family grew up with Saint Bernards and can’t wait to help him gain weight. He went home with our reception manager’s mom, so he’s still in the family and will continue to post many updates as he continues his healing journey! He has to come back twice a week for check-ups.”

His passion for tennis balls and playful moments are signs that, despite the challenges he faced, Stu is rediscovering the joy and simple pleasures of life.
Although there are still obstacles to overcome, the latest update confirms that Stu is on the path to full recovery.
With a sensitive belly and many well-deserved naps, his energy is slowly returning, promising a bright and love-filled future for this adorable Saint Bernard.
